Off to get a close look at the terminal face of Fox Glacier, which looks like an aquamarine tongue sticking out between two mountainsides. Unlike most glaciers, which are receding, New Zealand’s are advancing. Close proximity to the sea is a major factor.
The air was chilly near the glacier. Glaciers, we learned, are made from ice. Who knew?
After touring the glacier, we drove back to the town of Fox Glacier and had lunch at the Cook Saddle CafĂ© and Saloon. While we waited for our food, Ivy served me tea at a low table in back. Pulling fistfuls of grass from the lawn, she asked, “Foffee?” and carefully arranged a green pile at my place. Tasted more like green tea, but the service was charming.
