Off the paved road, we stopped at a river crossing to admire the view. Here I took some of my favorite pictures of the trip, as the light and mood were just right. For two hours, clouds covering the peaks teased us. We yawned, breathed the pastoral smells, and spotted parachutes in the vast blue sky.
Considered driving to Gillespies Beach to camp, but we lost motivation as the land soaked up more late-afternoon sunlight and we soaked up more late-afternoon beer. So instead of threading the narrow road to the beach, we threw a few shrimp on the barbee and had a picnic to celebrate Hillery’s birthday. We were in luck, too, as some Australian tourists wandered by with just the right amount of practical advice.
Cake! Cake! I really like cake!
That evening’s sunset was one for the storybooks.
